Bismarck boys make it 11 straight in Class A

RESULTS

The Bismarck boys extended one of the longest high school championship streaks in the U.S. by winning their 11th straight Class A boys cross country title. The Demons were led up front by senior Sam Clausnitzer (US#19), who won his second straight title with 15:52 in Grand Forks.

Clausnitzer’s second title gave Bismarck a ninth straight individual champion as well.

The girls Class A team race was a little less predictable, but Bismarck won that too. Freshman Mattie Shirley-Fairbairn (US#26) ran 13:47 for 4,000 meters to beat top rival Karly Ackley of Grand Forks Central (14:05).

The Bismarck girls scored 56 points to Grand Forks Central’s 72. A big advantage at the fifth scoring spot helped swing the championship to the Demons.

In Class B, the New Town boys, who back in September dealt Bismarck a rare in-state loss, ran as a pack up front and scored 17 points. Junior leader Ryan Wheeling ran 16:17.4 to pace a New Town effort that went 1-2-3-5-6-9-11. That’s right – all seven in the top 11. And six of those seven are non-seniors.

New Town has won 10 of the past 12 small-school cross country titles in North Dakota.

Kate Fox of Southern McLean, a senior, ran 14:22.5 to win the Class B girls title. It was Hillsboro/Central Valley taking the team win with 94 points.
